Memorial Day

May 27, 2010

Memorial Day is a U.S. Federal Holiday that is always celebrated on the last Monday of May. Its origin dates back at least to before the Civil War, but was officially declared a holiday by President Lyndon Johnson in May of 1966. The original intent was to honor those who passed away while serving in our Armed Services. It now also has a number of other unofficial roles, like the “start of summer”, big car and furniture sales, and make-sure-the-grill-has-gas day, just to name a few.

We should really step back and remember the men and women who gave their lives for all of us. I doubt there are any of us who don’t know a family that has suffered somewhere in their past with the loss of a loved one in this way. Even today, living in a country that is fighting wars on a number of fronts, we need to pray for the families of those who have perished. It is an honor and privilege to live in this country, and it has & continues to be won with the blood of its citizens. Let’s continue to remember that – no matter what day it is.
